Lazy lights

Do you, or more specifically does your car have lazy lights?

These days so many cars have an auto-dip function that they have become, in my humble opinion, the new menace of the roads.

Is it just me, or do other people believe that these lights are just yet another “benefit” for the lazy among us? I have them in my car, and it was one of the first things I turned off. My own feeling is that drivers should be in control of their vehicle and should be trained to do certain things automatically, like looking ahead for oncoming lights and dipping your own lights before you blind the driver of that vehicle. While I’m writing about things that should be automatic, indicators! It still astounds me how many people are so mentally overstretched when driving that they can’t use indicators.

Cars have become not only easier to drive with endless “driver aids” but safer too, so why have drivers become less and less capable? Maybe drivers became less capable because cars became more capable, or maybe cars are now made to cater to an ever-decreasing ability and concentration level.

The issue I have with the self-adjusting lights is that they are really rather rubbish at dipping in time, but also because they are made to track round corners, this means that unlike traditional lights on corners, they are already pointing at oncoming vehicles as they come in to view.

As you can tell, I really dislike lazy drivers, and as a result, I also dislike things that enable laziness behind the wheel.

I’d love to see a campaign that focussed on calling out lazy drivers as having less natural ability to drive thereby trying to get those people to work harder to be better drivers and concentrate more.
