Whose lane is it anyway? (2)

Look at the exit marker on the left with one stripe, and the car in lane 3. Ask yourself if this is a good point at which to commence a manoeuvre to leave the motorway?
How about now? This was the first indication that the driver was intending to move left. Notice also the arrows under the front white van that indicate the exit. The slip road is also reduced to a single lane with cones.

How about now?
Well, the driver made the exit, sort of, but notice that he’s illegally crossing the chevrons with solid white line border. Notice also that the driver is having to brake to squeeze in between the white vans.

Above are a series of screenshots taken from dashcam footage of an all too common manoeuvre that people who are not paying attention to the road make. What would you have done if you were driving the offending car?

The correct answer, of course, is that you should remain on the motorway and miss the junction. You can then safely proceed to the next junction and return on the other side. This time hopefully paying attention and leaving the motorway safely.

There is absolutely no excuse for this sort of driving.

Pay attention, plan ahead, and most of all, keep yourself, your passengers, and other drivers and their passengers alive.

The chevron area often has all sorts of gravel and detritus on it that can make it extremely unsafe to drive on. It’s the reason that formula one drivers stay on the “racing line”, because off that well-used part of the track the surface can be very unpredictable and dangerous.
